Near-Infrared Spectral Classification of late-M and L Dwarfs

چکیده

We present near-infrared (1 to 2.5 μm) low-resolution spectroscopy of eleven ultracool dwarfs with spectral types ranging from M7 to L8. Combining our observations with data published previously by Leggett et al. (2001), we have measured equivalent widths for the strongest atomic features and constructed narrowband indices to gauge the strength of the strongest molecular features. Those measurements show that the behaviour at near-infrared wavelengths is well correlated with spectral type, where the latter is defined from observations between 6300 and 10000 Å. In particular, four indices designed to measure absorption in the wings of the 1.4 and 1.85μm steam bands exhibit a linear, monotonic correlation with spectral type on the Kirkpatrick et al. (1999) system, allowing consistent calibration from both optical and near-infrared spectroscopy. Subject headings: stars: low-mass, brown dwarfs – stars: late-type

Near-infrared Spectroscopy of Brown Dwarfs: Methane and the Transition between the L and T Spectral Types

We report the possible identification of weak methane spectral features in the near-infrared K band in two late L dwarfs, DENIS 0205-11 (L7) and 2MASS 1523+30 (L8). New, high signal-to-noise ratio flux-calibrated spectra, spanning the wavelength interval 1.10−2.35 μm with an average resolving power R = 1800 were obtained using NIRSPEC on the Keck II telescope. Results are reported and compared ...

Spectral Classification and Effective Temperatures of L and T Dwarfs Based on Near - Infrared Spectra

We have obtained near-infrared spectra of L dwarfs, L/T transition objects and T dwarfs using Subaru. The resulting spectra are examined in detail to see their dependence on the spectral types. One question is where the methane feature appears: We suggest that it appears at L8 and marginally at L6.5. The water bands at 1.1 and 1.4 μm do not necessarily show steady increase towards later L types...

We present complete near-infrared (0.85{2.45 m), low-resolution (100) spectra of a sample of 26 disk L-dwarfs with reliable optical spectral type clas-siication. The observations have been obtained with NICS at the TNG using a prism-based optical element (the Amici device) that provides a complete spectrum of the source on the detector. Our observations show that low-resolution near-infrared sp...

The Spectra of T Dwarfs I: Near-Infrared Data and Spectral Classification

We present near-infrared spectra for a sample of T dwarfs, including eleven new discoveries made using the Two Micron All Sky Survey. These objects are distinguished from warmer (L-type) brown dwarfs by the presence of methane absorption bands in the 1–2.5 μm spectral region. A first attempt at a near-infrared classification scheme for T dwarfs is made, based on the strengths of CH4 and H2O ban...

Beyond M: Ultracool dwarfs in the Solar Neighbourhood

I review the optical and near-infrared spectral characteristics of the extremely cool dwarfs grouped under the new classification of type L. These include both very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, and we discuss the likely temperature range. Finally, we consider the frequency of binaries amongst very low-mass dwarfs, and the implications for formation mechanisms.
